Service Description

What is Shinrin-yoku? In Japanese it means "forest bathing," or immersing oneself in the atmosphere of nature, letting it wash over you. It is not a hike (no cardio!). Nor is it a naturalist walk filled with facts and data, nor psychological therapy nor even mindfulness. It is meditative. It is healing. It is a slowing down in Nature, a noticing, your senses fully activated to drop you into a state of just beingness. You will feel tended, supported and stronger. Indeed it is 'tree tonic, for body, mind, spirit.' Your field guide for the senses - far more than 5 - is Kate Bast, Certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide, proprietor of Shinrin-Yoku Madison. Kate's mission is to help people find calm, a balm, meaning and deep connection - with Nature. Our hope is that as bereaved parents, this will give you space to connect with nature, your child's spirit and yourself as you move through your grief journey. Together with co-host and bereaved parent Michelle Kullman, Kate holds space for all that arises or opens up, be it a sense of joy, curiosity, understanding, remembering, grief, or perhaps something else. Through a series of present moment prompts that invite nature interaction, Kate helps us experience the felt sense of the moment. Nature provides the healing we individually need. Kate opens the door to that, and more. Walks will proceed slowly and silently. A share is offered after each prompt. Prompts may last 10-30 minutes. Kate guides on lands with which she has nurtured a relationship, and will manage time and safety. Bring: appropriate clothing for the weather - layers, and sturdy, comfortable shoes, rain coat, are best. Walk will be cancelled or rescheduled in the event of severe weather. Bring a full water bottle, necessary medications, and anything else you'd like to have along, in a light pack or easy-to-carry bag. Light refreshments will be provided at the end of the walk with a tea ceremony and time for reflection.
