About the event

Learn to let it go, and just BE, as you explore APT’s “verdant garden estate,” the trails and beautiful land surrounding the stage. Kate Bast, certified nature and forest therapy guide of Shinrin-Yoku Madison, leads this immersive walk in the atmosphere of nature to help you find calm, a balm, meaning and connection.

Enjoy Shinrin-Yoku, a guided nature connection and forest therapy walk, before or after the days play.  Known as “forest bathing,” the practice helps you slow down, calm the mind, open and activate your senses, and ground you ground in the present moment, while immersed in and with nature. You will connect with the beautiful APT landscape, its hilltop prairie (a steep trail is involved) or its quiet oak savannah.

Your field guide to the senses is Kate Bast, a certified nature and forest therapy guide, who leads you on these slow-going, silent walks, and shares of-the-moment invitations (or prompts) to help you connect with APT’s beautiful setting and sense of place, yourself and the storied web of interbeing -- as well as what unfolds before you on the stage.

Impermanence ‘tis the thing, a wonder to behold, revealed, just this once, and perhaps, never again -- whether in the woods, or during the performance.

As the group ambles the trails, we will lean into the felt sense of the experience, noticing what we notice. You'll come to understand what forest bathing is, how nature is a balm for our health and wellbeing – the benefits are measurable and myriad – and walk away feeling calm yet reinvigorated and ready to focus on the play and the nuances within. Nature connection also helps us more deeply enjoy life, beauty, art.

A light nature tea is served at walk's end.  For more on the forest bathing experience, click here

Kate is founder of Shinrin-Yoku Madison, based in Wisconsin. You may recognize her name from the masthead of BRAVA and Wisconsin Trails magazines, among others, where she served as editor-in-chief.

Attend a forest bathing walk with Kate, and after registration you will receive a discount code for that day’s play – or another, on a day that suits you best. Thanks, APT!

Evening play: Ring Round the Moon

Get away to a fool’s paradise, where wit and money swirl like confetti to the beat of a big band. In this verdant garden estate, plans are set in motion to increasingly ridiculous results. Ignited by a mélange of egos, libidos and rivalries, and the staff that watches on in wry wonder at their foolishness. Lavish, musical and ever-so-clever, there are few companies in the country that handle this kind of high comedy with the elegance of APT. Come see them in all their charmed and charming glory.

Discount code to a play: 25% off any Hill performance, 4 tickets per customer, any section except Stage Circle! Once you register for the walk with Shinrin-Yoku Madison, the code will be forwarded to you. Registration closes Friday July 19.

Picnicking before the play:  You are welome to picnic at APT after the walk, and before the play. Bring your own picnic supplies, or select from APT's delightful selection of sandwiches, entrees, picnic baskets and pies from Hubbard Avenue Diner. Order online or call the APT Box Office at 608-588-2361. Please note, picnics must be ordered in advance by the day before your performance, no later than 4:00 pm.

All picnic dinners are made fresh daily, delivered to APT and are served chilled upon your arrival. Picnics may be picked up at the concessions stand in the picnic area starting two hours before the performance or following the matinee. Sorry, no substitutions

For your snacking pleasure, APT offers three concession stands: one at the top of the parking lot in the picnic area (also where you pick up pre-ordered picnic entrees), and one each in the Hill and Touchstone Theatre lobbies. Each concession stand offers a selection of beverages, including coffee, wine, beer and soda, as well as snacks and a limited number of pre-made sandwiches.

Hope to see you in the woods --  come enjoy the uniqueness of forest bathing and a wonderful, renown outdoor theater experience!!
